It is important for you to understand the difference between a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon. A plastic surgeon is a recognized specialist surgeon who has successfully completed a Royal Australasian College of Surgeons (RACS) program in plastic surgery. This program requires a minimum of 8 years training on top of a basic medical degree. Upon completing this training the surgeon will be awarded with a certificate called the Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons. It is also known as FRACS. Once the surgeon has this and is regarded fully qualified then they are able to become a member of the ASPS which is short for the Australian Society of Plastic Surgeons.
