Essentially, there are currently two primary kinds of breast implants which are the saline and the silicone kinds. Several other kinds used to exist but their usage is not as common as these two primary ones. In fact, some of them like soy oil or polypropylene string ceased to be manufactured and therefore cannot be found in today’s breast surgery procedures. Knowledge of the different kinds of breast implants is important for making decisions on which type to use because they have different compositions and may produce varying results in different bodies.

Saline implants

These have been the most preferred implants for some good time. They contain a silicone elastometer shell which is filled with saline liquid that has been sterilized.  With the goal of inserting them through smaller incisions, these implants were first manufactured in 1964 in France. The salt water (saline) is normally filled after placing the implant in the incision. This means that the implant is small at the time of insertion thus needing a smaller incision. Saline is less toxic and therefore these kind of implants are considered safer especially in the case of a rapture.

Silicone gel implants

These are not as popular as the saline implants due to safety reasons. They contain a silicone shell that is filled with a silicone gel-viscous in form. They have been associated with medical disorders like capsular contracture, rapture, leakage and even connective tissue disorders. They are thicker due to the silicone filling prior to insertion, implying that conditions like those of rapture may take sometime before they are noticed. In addition, they will require a bigger incision for inserting. There has been continued argument by the manufacturers of silicone gel implants that new types are safer than before and they should be given credit.

Since there are  different kinds of  implants in the market falling under the two main categories of breast implants, it is always crucial to consider certain factors when choosing the breast implant for your use. Shape is vital and it’s widely accepted that round breast implants will give a shape that is more natural in breast surgery procedures. Textured breast implants are the best for preventing capsular contracture as they cause formation of the scar in a manner that is less uniform thus preventing hardening. Due to this effect, there is always the possibility of the textured implant causing a ripple unlike smooth implants. If you have a history of capsular contracture, it is advisable to use a textured breast implant. Overall, when picking on the kind of breast implant to use, you need to consider safety first in order to avoid using an implant that will lead to complicated effects.
